Clear expectations will rise so high for John Carter. Not only because the script nuanced story of science fiction action movie is lifted from the early part of the eleven series of the legendary novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom, John Carter is also a live action movie directorial debut for the winner of two Academy Awards, Andrew Stanton, who may be more widely known as a retainer animation studio Pixar Animation Studios and the brains behind the remarkable success of Finding Nemo (2003) and WALL • E (2008). On several occasions, Stanton was revealed that John Carter is an ambitious personal project that long since he wanted to make happen - a passion that the audience will be felt clearly in John Carter's storytelling rhythm that runs through 132 minutes.
Since it was released in 1912, a series of works of Burroughs' Barsoom novels have inspired so many shades of science fiction stories were released later, including several drafts of the film, directed by George Lucas, Steven Spielberg by James Cameron. Therefore, need not be surprised if when you see John Carter, you'll get some of Indiana Jones (1983 - 2008), Star Wars (1977 - 2008) and Avatar (2009) was in several pieces of its telling. Story of John Carter's own script, adapted from the beginning Barsoom series, A Princess of Mars (1912), by Stanton, Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon, is less able to explore new things kind of adventure story. With the same superficiality can be felt in the dialog row John Carter, the film is definitely not a dish that focuses on the innovative quality of writing the story and dialogue.
Background story in 1861, John Carter talked about the character titularnya (Taylor Kitsch), who is a former United States military forces involved in the Civil War, but after the death of his wife and daughter, decided to stay away from the world war and chose to hunt for gold mines in various parts of the United States. One day, after being chased a group of U.S. military forces that compelled him to return to the battlefield as well as a group of tribal forces from the Apache, John Carter hiding in a cave and then finds himself mysteriously moved to the planet Mars - or by the indigenous people of the planet called Barsoom.
John Carter's first meeting with the indigenous people of the planet Mars occurred when he met with leaders of the tribe of aliens Tharks, Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe), who then took John Carter to the collection of colonies and consider it as one of the pets. However, it did not take long for John Carter to engage in an ongoing battle on the red planet: the battle that took place between residents of cities and towns Zodanga Helium. The war may be terminated if it is actually the daughter of the city of Helium, Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), want to marry a prince of the city Zodanga, Sat Than (Dominic West). Of course, the attitude and the suspicion that the marriage with Dejah Thoris Sat Than just a disguise to beat Helium makes the princess rejected the holding of the marriage. Clearly, John Carter went on to become its own complement of factors that determine how the war between Zodanga and Helium will expire.
Those who expect John Carter will have a depth and emotional stories like the movies that ever handled by Andrew Stanton will likely be disappointed with the script a story that is represented by John Carter. Not just a superficial impression in terms of extracting the story and dialogue are delivered, John Carter also contains too many who want to put forward the plot and unfortunately failed to be developed to be able to perform simple and attractive. After opening with a pretty spectacular action scenes, and followed by a series of scenes introduction to the nuances of character comedy John Carter, John Carter then goes into a lot of directions with a focus that is not stabilized. In fact, once the focus is less the initial storyline is presented in John Carter, the audience will likely still find themselves feeling confused about what is really going to be delivered even after 90 minutes of this movie is running.
The second biggest weakness of the John Carter is the number of characters is presented in considerable amounts, but failed to get the excavation of deep character. Characters such as Sola (Samantha Morton), Sat Than (Dominic West), Matai Shang (Mark Strong) and several other characters appear in the story without ever getting the motivation of existence and their essential role in the storyline. Even the main characters such as John Carter and Dejah Thoris are also sometimes appear too flat, which makes most of the audience will be hard to feel an emotional connection to what is endured by the characters in the story is John Carter.
Inversely proportional to the division of writing the story, John Carter is a visual display of a maximum advantage of this film. Throughout the film runs 132 minutes, Andrew Stanton managed to string a row of pictures with the soft coloring - it's never too bright or vice versa - which reinforces the work of Daniel Mindel beautiful cinematography. Visual excellence John Carter also feels stronger with the passing of the duration and intensity of conflict stories that appear in it. Admittedly, after a tempo run with a fairly simple since the film began, the golden moments of John Carter is slowly beginning to emerge and perform satisfactorily after the middle of this movie.
Glance at the department of film acting, John Carter is filled with rows of actors and actresses are able to show their best acting performances to revive their respective roles. Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins who was in the front line acting department also managed to produce a very convincing chemistry with each other and the stronger the support for the acting of Dominic West, Mark Strong, James Purefoy and talents of names like Samantha Morton, Willem Dafoe and Thomas Hade Church. Problems in the acting department of John Carter, unfortunately, comes from a lack of charisma Kitsch as the main star of this adventure. Kitsch does not have the aura of charismatic leadership that can make its presence felt every so meaningful. Deficiencies that sometimes makes the character John Carter was less able to perform manarik.
Formed from several drawbacks that arise in terms of storytelling are less dense and focused to make a lot of moments in the John Carter was too flat and less able to talk in more depth. Does it make John Carter as a disappointing movie? Maybe. Even so, with his intelligence in arranging every scene with a strong visual appearance, the audience will still be able to feel the passion and love for Andrew Stanton is so strong as to show a compelling storyline. Stanton was too focused on the visual division may have to sacrifice the power of storytelling and emotional John Carter. Still, as a result of the live action movie directorial debut, John Carter is still able to perform interesting and entertaining.
